AAAS Review Update: Why Engagement Matters Now

Outdoors NSW & ACT supports the current review of the Australian Adventure Activity Standard (AAAS) and associated Good Practice Guides being led nationally by the Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA).

The AAAS underpins how leadership capability, risk management and professional standards are understood across the Outdoor Industry — including outdoor education, recreation, adventure tourism and therapeutic contexts. The outcomes of this review will influence workforce pathways, insurer confidence, regulatory clarity and how professionalism is articulated across the sector.

What Is Being Reviewed?

The current project is funded to review and update the AAAS and existing Good Practice Guides within their current structure. This includes improving clarity, aligning with contemporary practice and addressing known inconsistencies.

One key area under discussion is how leadership capability is articulated — particularly the Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) framework and references to qualification competencies. Industry feedback has indicated that this area requires careful consideration.

What Happens Next?

OCA will shortly release a national industry survey to test sentiment around potential structural changes to leadership capability articulation. In parallel, the Core Good Practice Guide Committee is developing a potential alternative model should industry support change.

If endorsed through consultation, reform will be embedded within the current review cycle, supported by appropriate governance and expertise.

Why This Matters to NSW & ACT Stakeholders

This is a national framework that affects:

  • Education and training pathways

  • Workforce mobility

  • Insurance and regulatory interpretation

  • Business sustainability and professionalism

Outcomes will be shaped by those who participate in the consultation process.

Outdoors NSW & ACT encourages all NSW and ACT Outdoor Industry stakeholders to read the update from OCA and engage in the process. This is our national standard.

Strong participation ensures it reflects contemporary Outdoor Industry practice across all sectors.
