The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is an essential classification system used by the Australian and New Zealand governments to categorise and standardise occupations for various purposes.
ANZSCO codes are crucial for several reasons:
Migration and Visa Purposes: ANZSCO codes play a significant role in Australia's immigration system. They help determine eligibility for skilled migration visas. Different visas have different skill and occupation requirements, and ANZSCO codes help match applicants' skills and qualifications with the appropriate visa categories.
Job Matching: ANZSCO codes are used by employers and job seekers to match job openings with the skills and qualifications of potential candidates. This ensures that the right candidates are considered for the right positions, leading to better alignment between job requirements and applicant skills.
Education and Training: ANZSCO codes provide guidance for educational institutions and training providers to design relevant courses and programs that align with the needs of the job market. Students can use ANZSCO codes to make informed decisions about their education and training choices, ensuring that they are preparing for careers in demand.
Labor Market Analysis: Governments and policymakers use ANZSCO codes to analyse and monitor labor market trends. This data helps them understand employment patterns, job growth, and areas of skill shortages. This information is crucial for making informed policy decisions related to workforce development and economic planning.
Wage Determination: ANZSCO codes can influence wage determinations. Specific occupations and skill levels are associated with different wage scales. This information is used by government bodies, trade unions, and employers to negotiate fair wages for workers.
Statistical Reporting: ANZSCO codes enable accurate reporting and statistical analysis of labor market trends, including unemployment rates, industry growth, and regional employment disparities. This data is essential for assessing the health of the job market and making informed decisions related to employment policies.
Industry Regulation: In some cases, certain occupations might require specific certifications or licenses. ANZSCO codes can help regulate these requirements and ensure that individuals working in regulated professions meet the necessary standards.
Right now, our industry is not well represented in the ANZSCO codes due to the fact that the industry uses a variety of 50 odd codes, thus diluting the impact or needs of our industry. As a result, we struggle in many of the above areas when it comes to being recognised for our needs.
Outdoors NSW & ACT has submitted considerations for the Australian Bureau of Statistics as they currently review the codes. Very soon they will be asking for feedback and comments in their next round of the review. We hope the Outdoor Industry will stand with us and ensure we are better represented in the future.
