There has never been a better time to shine a light on the many career pathways available in the Outdoor Industry — and in particular, the important role of outdoor guides and leaders.
Across NSW, the ACT and beyond, outdoor guides help people connect with nature, challenge themselves, build confidence, learn new skills and experience places they may never have explored on their own. Whether it is bushwalking, paddling, canyoning, mountain biking, climbing, camping, school outdoor education, adventure tourism or community-based outdoor programs, outdoor guides are at the heart of safe, memorable and meaningful experiences.
Thanks to the work of the Outdoor Leader Committee of Outdoors NSW & ACT, a new promotional video has been developed to help showcase just how rewarding a career in outdoor guiding can be. The video has been created as a practical resource to inspire career seekers — both young and wise — to consider the outdoors as a genuine, exciting and purposeful career pathway.
For young people exploring their future, outdoor guiding offers much more than a job. It provides the chance to work in incredible places, develop leadership and communication skills, build confidence, support others, and be part of an industry that contributes to health, wellbeing, education, tourism and regional economies.
But this message is not just for school leavers or those starting out. Many people are looking for a career change, a more meaningful connection to their work, or a way to turn their love of the outdoors into something more. Outdoor guiding can offer that opportunity. Whether someone is 18, 38 or 58, the industry needs passionate, capable and committed people who enjoy working with others and understand the value of outdoor experiences.
The Outdoor Industry has a diverse range of roles and entry points. Some people begin as assistant guides or camp leaders, while others come through training pathways, volunteering, tourism operations, education settings, clubs or personal outdoor pursuits. For many, the first step is simply realising that this is a real career option — and that there are organisations, training providers and industry bodies ready to support them along the way.
That is why resources like this new video are so important. They help tell the story of the industry in a way that is visual, relatable and inspiring. Outdoor guiding is a real job! Yes it includes adventure — but you also learn about responsibility, leadership, care, safety, connection and impact.
Outdoor guides play a critical role in helping more people get outdoors more often, and do so safely. They introduce people to new environments, support confidence and participation, manage risk, and help create positive experiences that can last a lifetime. In many cases, a great guide is the reason someone falls in love with the outdoors.
For Outdoors NSW & ACT, promoting outdoor guiding careers is also about strengthening the future workforce of the Outdoor Industry. We know that many operators, schools, camps, tourism businesses and community organisations are seeking skilled and enthusiastic staff. Building awareness of outdoor guiding as a career pathway is an important step in attracting new people into the sector and supporting the sustainability of the industry into the future.
We encourage outdoor businesses, schools, training providers, youth organisations, career advisers and industry supporters to share the new video widely. Use it in classrooms, career expos, staff recruitment, social media, newsletters and conversations with anyone who may be looking for a career with purpose, movement, connection and impact.
The outdoors needs guides. It needs leaders. It needs people who care about nature, people, safety, health benefits nature can provide and shared experiences.
And for those wondering whether a career outdoors could be for them — this may just be the sign they have been waiting for.
