Remember all the great old-fashioned outdoors fun like building cubbies in the bush, making a raft, making mud pies and exploring bush trails with mates? The team at NRMA Parks and Resorts takes all this and more to the next level with world famous adventurer Bear Grylls OAM and his very own Survival Academy designed especially for kids. Learning hands-on outdoor survival skills and sharing fun times with friends in the great outdoors are all part of NRMA Parks and Resorts’ exclusive three-year partnership with the Bear Grylls Survival Academy in Australia which launched in 2022. Geared at kids aged from six to 17, the program – called Shipwrecked – is made up of four missions set up at Bear Grylls camps at select NRMA holiday parks. Kids can learn how to light a campfire, how to tie knots, how to navigate using a compass, how to build a bush shelter and – the most fun of all – how to search for excellent (and disgusting!) bushfoods like witchety grubs or mealy worms and give them a taste test! Errrk! Cue dares and giggles all round… Ideal for primary and lower high-school school groups, NRMA Parks and Resorts has partnered with Outdoors NSW & ACT to align the Bear Grylls Survival program with school camps. The program is a great way for students to ditch the devices and have some good old-fashioned fun in the great outdoors. It’s a chance to break down social barriers and make new friends, overcome fears and anxieties and build resilience without even knowing it, bond together to problem-solve and work together as a team. Long regarded as one of the most trusted brands in Australia, NRMA Parks provides a high-quality school camp experience with plenty of adventures in a safe and secure environment. The four hour-long missions to be completed at the Bear Grylls Survival Academy are: ● Hide to Survive where participants will learn how to build a shelter for protection using building materials found in nature ● Get out Alive where kids learn to tie knots, cross difficult terrain and follow a trail using communication and teamwork ● Navigate the Island where kids learn about pacing, navigation and how to follow an orienteering course ● Feast in the Wild teaches fire lighting methods together with preparing and cooking damper and learning the skill of throwing spears at targets. School students will love the highly engaging Shipwrecked program and enjoy an unforgettable time on camp. The program offers a real chance to broaden the traditional education experience in a wholistic way that embraces nature and the outdoors and is wholly beneficial to students’ wellbeing. As Bear Grylls says, "It is through adventure in our wild spaces that people, especially children, really learn and grow. When I think about the outdoors, I don’t just see woodlands, rivers and mountains; I see the world’s biggest classroom. Taking part in an outdoor expedition frees the mind and liberates the spirit. It also reminds us of what we’re truly capable of achieving. That is why I believe that every child has the right to adventure."
